The Prepared Path Course Review

Today, I would like to share with you one of best survival course in the market. This is an extremely comprehensive course on how to survive during SHTF (natural disasters, financial breakdown, etc) created by Damian Brindle, the respected survivalist behind reThinkSurvival.com. (By the way, there are tons of free stuffs that he put out there on his blog that others charge a fortune for, so do check him out!).

I went through the whole course thoroughly, and in short, I do recommend it especially for beginners that are looking for A-Z, well-put together materials. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty useful even if you already have some knowledge in this field. However, I do think that beginners benefit most from this course.

I will be going through the advantages and some of the drawbacks of the course so you can decide for yourself if it's going to work out for you. Besides, there will be a summary (breakdown) of the 12 modules taught in the course.

Verdict: It's a pretty great course overall especially if you are the kind that likes to learn in a step-by-step manner. The modules (as you will see below) cover various important aspects of survival. In each module, you are taught based on the A.P.T concept that will allow you to plan accordingly depending on the duration of the disaster. In my opinion, definitely a great course for beginners that don't know where to start (although it's suitable for everyone).

Module 1 - Water

Water is something which is something so imperative for survival but often taken for granted. The course is aimed at changing your whole mindset into an experienced prepper mindset where you can no longer live that “normal” lifestyle in abundance of clean water.

All of his teachings are very down to earth, asking you to be aware of the amount of water you use from flushing the toilet to watering your plants. Also, he talks about using the already stored water in the house and how to find them.

Damian even covered the steps of collecting rainwater for more water storage and how to effectively filter it. He even debunked the myth of why you should use ocean water for drinking saying it is not worth your time and effort to desalinate and distill it. He even covered why you should not rely too much on your swimming pool and hot tub water.

He makes the obvious water sources such as streams nearby seem undrinkable and provides compelling reasons to support his statement. Not to fret, he also provides a viable solution of making a well in certain conditions.

As for his temporary solutions, he teaches really effective ways to store water and he explains why you should not store water in certain ways which may be detrimental to the health of your family. He even introduced many creative ways to store gallons of water including a water Bug Out Bag. There is even one section where he shares about the International Beverage Containers (IBC), weighing the pros and cons to help you decide on whether to get this thing.

The water module is separated into 3 parts which makes it much more comprehensible. He gives some ideas about boiling water and even gave his thoughts on the different kinds of filter.

Module 2 - Food Storage

He starts off in his comprehensive guide regarding things we need to consider for food safety. He gives simple to follow guidelines to extend your food’s shelf life such as temperature monitoring. In this particular point, he even elaborated on passive cooling and weighs out the pros and cons of a cooler. The most exciting thing of all, is taking advantage of cold temperature.

There are also tips on what food to store and which one you should never purchase. He even shared on the easiest way to build a stockpile. Damian even share on how to have the most nutritious food when you need to keep your family alive and healthy.

Moreover, he has explained what to consider when you have canned food rotation which goes by the principle “first in, first out”. Then he extends to the 5 ways to store your favorite perishable food without refrigeration during the hot weather. Want to know more? You just have to check out the course.

Coming to his austere solution, he will teach you about canning and how to deal with long-term bulk food. After sharing about the different types of canning, he talks about bulk food which are aimed at adding calories. He even included a long term food storage menu. Amazingly detailed guide by telling you what to store and how to store it! Then, he comes to talk about practical ways of storing bulk food so that they can last for a very long time.

Module 3 - Sanitation and Hygiene

Basically, he tells the importance of proper sanitation and effective ways to make sure we maintain that. One topic on off the grid sanitation, he shows us effective ways to keep from getting sick when you have no running water which means you cannot even flush your toilet. If you do not deal with your waste properly, you may get many kinds of debilitating diseases which are threatening your life.

He even gave a comprehensive guide on making a makeshift toilet! Starting with the makeshift washing station, he stresses how important washing your hands really can be and most of us take it for granted. Following with a makeshift portable sink, he started talking about stockpiling hygiene supplies.

Going to part 2 on sanitation when there is no water, he explains why we should hold on to the principle of “Dig or Die”. Apologizing for the unpleasantness of digging, he quickly explains why there is no other way. Then, he started talking about sewer back-flow prevention, where if the sewer were to have a backflow to your pipes, you will have a very bad time smelling while exposing yourself to potential diseases. Damian also discussed about building an outhouse which is followed by how you can make homemade cleaners.

Shedding some light on personal hygiene, he shares a way to still take shower and conserve water. You will also be amazed by the passive solar shower he has introduced in his course. Reminding you that water is heavy, he even prepared a way to solve the issue. Coming to basic laundry washing, he talks about sophisticated ways to dry your clothes. Then, he takes on the issue of solar barrel shower, another alternative to take a hot shower. Talking about all-rounded, he even explains the processes to make a DIY detergent. Talking about creative, he elaborates about 20-gallon shower setup, hand-powered laundry washing machine and all different kinds of ways to wash the dishes.

Module 4 - First Aid and Medication

Damian starts off showing some first aid knowledge and good references to get useful knowledge regarding the topic on hand. He also shares how you would need to build your first aid kit which can potentially save the lives of you and your loved ones.

I really like how he phrased the 7 most common life threatening scenarios when a TEOTWAWKI situation happens. Firstly, sever bleeding where videos and infographics are shared to provide more understanding on the material. With number two being breathing, and number three is wound care. You will have to get the course to know more about the seven scenarios and how to overcome them!

Moving on to part 2, its time to learn how to effectively use your first aid supplies. He links to many different sites to increase the amount of explanation, making it more in depth. He is even detailed enough to talk about which antibiotic to store, where you should get them and even how you should buy them with amazing details!

Furthermore, he talks more about ways to deal with toothache in a SHTF situation while touching on a taboo topic which most people shy away from, childbirth during disaster. Damian did a good job extending to Mother Nature too, talking about how you can go about building a medicinal garden which provides natural remedies.

Module 5 - Safety and Security

He then moves on to safety of your family members when you have built up the basics. Thinking about events such as the Hurricane Katrina, he quickly elaborates how human morals are degrading and safety is much more important than you think.

First and foremost, you have to ensure your house has high fire safety standards. Since fire and spread extremely fast, you should really think of ways to mitigate this problem because you have no time to lose!

With this, he even states how you should follow the recommendations by the Chimney Safety Group. If you can use smoke alarms and fire extinguishers effectively, you can have a head start in leaving the house or stopping the fire. With that, he explains about the two types of smoke detectors where on type is best placed in a bedroom while the other is in a kitchen. Methods such as smothering buckets of sand or dirt to stop fire will also be explained. Detailing that smoke inhalation is the first cause of death during a fire, he starts with a fire escape plan guiding you from having an emergency lighting to turning off utilities. The smoked inhaled that causes death is carbon monoxide.

Moving on to the next part, Damian elaborates on home security measures laying out the groundwork of two focus area of exterior doors and ground floor windows of a home. With different locks and security items, you can keep your house safer making it harder to break into. Even for people living in anti-gun states, he has provided ways on how to protect yourself. There are tools recommended for self-defense besides firearms such as pepper spray. As for the states that allow firearms, there is an in-depth review of shotguns and even gun safes.

Since the exterior doors are not as solid as they look like, it would be wise that you invest in some security. Even the field of Operational Security (OPSEC) is touched upon to keep yourself alive when shit hit the fan. Next, ways to conceal handguns are shared while reviews of what to buy is given too.

Then, he gives out some ideas about making a stove. After showing you what propane stove is, he teaches you how to build your very own makeshift stove which can be fueled by twigs and nothing more. Furthermore, the is a section to cook food requiring no effort or attention which is thermal cooking, followed by reviewing commercially made stove. After touching on solar cooking, he talks about the practicality of putting all the above plans together to help you survive.

After that, Damian then shares a really comprehensive guide about campfire building. It starts off with firewood harvesting to starting a fire and finally sustaining a fire. Definitely unexpected information regarding Dutch Ovens will be provided to you too. Remembering the usefulness of hot water, you can boil it in the camp fire too. The making of solar ovens are introduced, teaching us how to take advantage of nature to its fullest for our very survival.

Module 8 - Lighting

This is a section which is really important for people living off the grid. Starting with temporary solutions, the making of makeshift candles and olive oil lamp will blow your mind away. Damian even provided a huge reading list to make sure you are really ready for the next power outage.

Moreover, there is a comparison between makeshift candles and commercially made candles, while touching a little bit about solar lights. He then continues with flashlights, giving reviews and showing you how standardizing the type of battery will help you prep. Going into headlamps, emergency lighting, key chain lighting and even wireless motion lights. He suggested products and how to use them effectively for all the kinds of lighting.

Moving on to Damian’s preferred solution, he shares about battery powered lanterns and why they are the best for families with small children. Talking about how you are limited with the number of quality batteries, he shows you what lanterns to buy and how to power them. Hand-crank lanterns, gas-fueled lanterns and even liquid fueled lanterns are introduced one by one, even showing you what to get and how to get them.

As for his austere solution, he talks about Direct Current Powered solar lights which is for long-term use. He even referenced to a power and fuel module to create a solar powered system if you are not satisfied.

Module 9 - Communications

Communication is imperative for you to know when disaster strikes your place. Damian started by introducing why NOAA weather radios is a must-have for every family member.

Speaking about the tweaks you can make for more effectively getting information, he shows you how you can make the radio only alert you when it is pertinent to your country or any state around you.

To keep as a backup, you can get AM or FM radio even information that your local authorities may consider confidential. Then, we go to shortwaves radio, keeping in contact with friends a family and even introducing us to the FRS/GMRS radios without forgetting to warn us of the drawback.

After the different kinds of radios, we reach the austere solution which is owning a HAM radio ending the module with recommendations and actions.

Module 10 - Power and Fuel

This module kicks off with alkaline batteries and why you should have them without forgetting to inform you where you should store the batteries. Then, moving on to cell phone charges and how you can spend less money on a generator but get even better results from it.

Having gasoline and diesel is also important. This information is followed by informing you the importance of having fuel stabilizers and rotation. Not to forget, propane which burns clean and how you can go for long-term using rechargeable batteries.

Doing bulk fuel storage, using a generator and even showing you how to make a generator! As for a long-term bug out plan, he shows how you can build a scalable solar power system with low cost.

Module 11 - Shelter and Clothing

This module will show you how to fix your home, and if forced to, you have to learn how to bug out. With hope, he starts with ways you can fix your house and what items are extremely useful for fixing the house.

Then, we go to makeshift shelters where he has filtered many information in the market which are not useful, providing us with the gist of what to do.

Moving on to staying dry, this is especially important during winter time while staying cool is to beat to heat during hot times. Then, he gave many recommendations on personal protective equipment and showing us what to aspect.

Module 12 - Everything else

As for the final module before you become a ready prepper, he will answer your questions regarding the importance of money and precious metals. Then, we go to bartering which would be important during a SHTF situation.

After that, we have to assort our supplies properly and ways to sustain our storeroom. He will show us tapes, glues, lubrication and cordage. Just as you thought you are fully prepared, he talks about how to take care of your kids and pets.

Special needs individual are also taken care of. Damian then finish off with things which are important to address such as physical fitness, saving money and many more.

This last module basically lays down the conclusion as well as recapping some of the important concepts in the course.​

Final Verdict: Personally, I do think it's a well-arranged, pack with actionable stuffs. Even if you already know about prepping, going through this course will refresh your thoughts, not to mention giving you new ideas to enhance your prepping skills and knowledge.
